Wall Street edges higher after historic closure

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks edged higher on Wednesday in the first trading session since a massive storm in the U.S. Northeast forced a two-day market closure.

Trading was expected to be volatile as exchanges dealt with pent-up demand from two untraded days. This was the first time the stock market had closed for two straight days because of weather since a major blizzard in 1888.

Among the biggest gainers of the day were Ford Motor Co , which reported strong results during the market closure, and Home Depot , which rallied as people bought supplies to repair storm damage.

Ford gained 5 percent to $10.83 as the most-traded stock on the New York Stock Exchange while Home Depot, a Dow component, added 3 percent to $61.85.

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq shuttered operations on Monday, hours before Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the U.S. eastern seaboard with devastating consequences. Transport into and around New York City remained limited on Wednesday, while wide-scale power outages meant many would be unable to work from home.

"Liquidity remains very light in equities as there are a lot of empty seats on the Street," said Dave Lutz, a Baltimore-based trader with Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. "We're also seeing some outsized moves."

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 59.10 points, or 0.45 percent, at 13,166.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 4.62 points, or 0.33 percent, at 1,416.56. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 1.45 points, or less than 0.1 percent, at 2,989.4.

Industrial stocks were the strongest on the day, rising 1 percent as investors bet the group would see additional demand from rebuilding efforts after the storm. The KBW Insurance sector fell 0.1 percent.

Ford posted a third-quarter profit that trounced analysts' forecasts on Tuesday, driven by higher vehicle prices and record profit margins of 12 percent in North America. Wednesday will be the first day investors will be able to trading on the earnings.

General Motors reported earnings Wednesday that beat expectations, sending shares up 5.4 percent to $24.54.

Among the most active Nasdaq stocks, Apple Inc slumped 2 percent to $591.69. The company announced management changes during the market closure.

Walt Disney Co agreed to buy filmmaker George Lucas's Lucas film Ltd and its "Star Wars" franchise for $4.05 billion in cash and stock, a blockbuster deal that includes the surprise promise of a new film in the series in 2015. Disney, a Dow component, edged 0.2 percent lower.

Investors will be looking ahead to Friday's U.S. nonfarm payrolls report, the last before the November 6 presidential election, which is expected to show 125,000 jobs added in October, up 11,000 from the previous month.

What Fears Are Holding Your Small Business Back? | Small ...

Halloween is almost here and creepy things are everywhere. It?s the time of year when we enjoy a good fright. But are there other (not-so-fun) fears holding your small business back from getting where you want it to go?

One of the joys of running your own business is that you get to decide what happens next. You don?t have to do what a boss is telling you. But sometimes, that can backfire if you avoid doing things that make you scared or uncomfortable. Yes, you may be able to get your business to a certain level of success without ever facing your demons. But if you want to achieve breakthrough growth, you need to push past the fears that are holding you back.

business fear

What kinds of fears are you facing (or failing to face)?

Below?are some common ones:

Fear Of Technology

Technology moves so fast today that sometimes it?s tempting to just throw up your hands and say, ?I?ll never get up to speed.? Well, your business can?t afford that attitude. Even if you?re a dyed-in-the-wool technophobe, you need to get over it, because today technology is essential to give your small business an edge.

Start by hiring someone (inside or outsourced) who knows the stuff you don?t and can get your company up to speed. If you must, take a class (online or off) to learn the basics. Enlist a patient friend to tutor you. Anything that gets you comfortable with what you need to know.

Fear Of Sales

This is a huge one for lots of entrepreneurs, myself included. When we first started our business, I struggled with fears of seeming pushy, aggressive or money-grubbing when I went out to ask for the sale. I wish I could tell you there?s some easy formula for getting over this fear, but there isn?t.

I just had to do it over and over, until it got easier (I didn?t say easy). Practice makes (almost) perfect.

Fear Of Being A Boss

When your company is young and small, it?s easy to feel like you and your tiny team are pretty much equals, and that?s more comfortable for many entrepreneurs who don?t want to be perceived as the distant ?boss-man.? However, as your business grows, you?ll have to distance yourself a bit so you can take on sometimes scary tasks like making unpopular decisions, or disciplining employees who aren?t working out.

I?m not saying you can?t be a nice, friendly boss, but acknowledging that you are the boss is a crucial step in getting your business to the next level.

Fear Of Networking

It?s easier than ever to network through social media today, and many of us are great at that. But you also need to go offline sometimes and get up close and personal. Networking has earned an unfortunate reputation as phony ?schmoozing,? but in reality, it?s how relationships are built and business is done.

Make sure you invite your online connections out for coffee or lunch on a regular basis, attend networking events and industry conferences, and generally put yourself out there. If you?re shy (like I am), start with things in your comfort zone (like coffee with one person) and move up to the big leagues gradually?but do move up, or your business won?t.

Fear Of Success

When you get stuck in the day-to-day running your business and making payroll, sometimes your sights get set too low. Do that long enough, and you may decide it?s not worth dreaming big because you?ll never get there anyway.

That?s the surest route to business stagnation and a ho-hum life. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, take your eyes off the ground and make time to look at the stars.

First Impressions Of The 13? Retina MacBook Pro: On The Path To A New Category-Defining Product

IMG_1783At its event today, Apple made much of the fact that the 13-inch MacBook Pro is still its top-selling notebook, right before unveiling the new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. It's clear that Apple wants this new version of its top-performer to take over as a product that redefines the laptop, and judging by limited hands-ion experience, there's good reason to believe they'll eventually get their wish.

FILE - This Jan. 31, 2008 video frame grab release by AP Television shows Sam Lutfi leaving UCLA medical center after visiting Britney Spears in Los Angeles. Testimony is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, in a libel, defamation and breach of contract case filed against Spears and her parents by the singer?s former confidante and manager, Osama ?Sam? (AP) ? Britney Spears' ex-manager described from the witness stand Wednesday a scene of domestic warfare, saying the superstar's father chased him around a kitchen, punched him and threatened his life.

Sam Lutfi, who is suing Spears' parents for defamation, testified while they watched from across the courtroom.

He denied accusations made in a book by Lynne Spears that he was a Svengali who became the gatekeeper of her daughter's world, locking her parents out of her life.

He contends he was a benevolent caretaker who protected Britney during her highly publicized meltdown.

Lutfi's direct testimony concluded in dramatic fashion as he was overcome by tears while describing the aftermath of the publication of the book.

"After the book came out, there was a huge spike of death threats that were pretty bad," he testified. "People I know were shunning me. Websites were created to kill me. People wished I was dead. People wished my family ... "

He didn't finish the sentence because he was crying.

"How did it make you feel," asked his attorney, Joseph Schleimer.

"Depressed, anxious and suicidal," Lutfi testified.

Lutfi told of days leading to Britney's hospitalization at a psychiatric unit, and jurors saw a video of the star ordering him around outside her home hours before she was taken away.

She was demanding that he let her drive her car and told him to get in the passenger seat. The scene outside her home was surreal, with TV lights and paparazzi surrounding her.

Lutfi said Britney feared her father Jamie Spears and fled her home when she heard he was coming. Lutfi said the father confronted him twice and punched him on the second visit.

"Jamie came barging into the house. He lunged at me and chased me around the kitchen island. He was spitting, yelling, shouting at me, and said I had hurt his daughter and he was going to beat the hell out of me and I'd better get out of the house," Lutfi testified.

After 10 minutes, he said, Jamie Spears was escorted out by security guards. But the next morning, he got into the house again and the battle resumed, Lutfi said.

"He cornered me in the kitchen, punched me in the solar plexus and threatened to kill me," Lutfi testified.

"How did it feel?" Schleimer asked.

"It hurt," Lutfi replied.

Asked what he did, he said, "I ran to the game room and locked myself in."

A lawyer for Spears said in opening statements that the father never physically assaulted Lutfi and merely touched him on the chest.

With Schleimer reading excerpts from Lynne Spears' book, Lutfi methodically denied every one of her accusations.

"Were you in complete control of Britney's life?" Schleimer asked.

"No," Lutfi said firmly.

"Did you attempt to keep Britney's family away?" he was asked.

"To the contrary, sir," Lutfi answered.

He denied cutting wires to phone lines in the house and hiding Britney's cellphones. He also said he never drugged the superstar.

Lutfi was expected to undergo cross-examination later in the day.

He is suing for damages for defamation and for a 15 percent share of the millions of dollars Britney made while he was with her.

The singer remains under the conservatorship of her father and has been told by a judge not to attend or testify in the trial.

She has made a remarkable comeback from her hard times, now acting as a judge on TV's "The X Factor."

The Avenger

129752256 Libyans taking pictures of Muammar Qaddafi's corpse on Oct. 20, 2011.

Many folks watching last night?s debate noticed something odd about Mitt Romney. He abandoned his tough-guy rhetoric and positioned himself as the candidate of peace. ?We can't kill our way out of this mess,? he said. Instead, he promised to ?help the world of Islam ? reject this radical violent extremism.?

There?s a flip side to that irony. Barack Obama, the liberal law professor, has become the lord of drones, raids, ousters, and assassinations. He hates troop deployments but loves to purge, punish, and liquidate. He?s not the candidate of war. He?s the candidate of vengeance.

I?m not saying the candidates have totally switched postures. Romney is still trying to out-macho Obama on military spending, standing up to Russia, and apologizing for America?s sins. Obama is still calling Romney ?reckless? and complaining that the former governor would leave too many troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Obama?s complaint is about leaving our soldiers overseas after we?ve done the job. Obama is all for doing the job, if we can kill the bad guys and get out.

Last night, Obama used Bob Schieffer?s opening question about Libya to deliver part of his stump speech: ?We ended the war in Iraq, refocused our attention on those who actually killed us on 9/11. And as a consequence, al-Qaida's core leadership has been decimated.? Decimated is Obama?s code for drone strikes. But the core of this pitch is Iraq vs. Afghanistan. And the case for refocusing on Afghanistan is to get the people who killed us. Not that Afghanistan is turning out any better than Iraq, mind you. It?s not about curing the world. It?s about payback.

Obama didn?t answer Schieffer?s question about what went wrong in Benghazi, Libya. He talked about the aftermath instead: ?I immediately made sure that, number one, that we did everything we could to secure those Americans who were still in harm's way; number two, that we would investigate exactly what happened, and number three, most importantly, that we would go after those who killed Americans and we would bring them to justice. And that's exactly what we're going to do.?

Like George W. Bush crowing about Saddam Hussein, Obama couldn?t stop waving the scalp of Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi. ?Got rid of a despot who had killed Americans,? Obama bragged. He added: ?When it came time to making sure that Qaddafi did not stay in power, that he was captured, governor, your suggestion was that this was mission creep, that this was mission muddle. Imagine if we had pulled out at that point. You know, Muammar Qaddafi had more American blood on his hands than any individual other than Osama Bin Laden. And so we were going to make sure that we finished the job.? To Obama, finish the job doesn?t mean making Libya a paradise or even a democracy. It means terminating the villain.

That set the stage for Obama?s main blast:

When you were a candidate in 2008, as I was?and I said if I got Bin Laden in our sights, I would take that shot?you said we shouldn't move heaven and earth to get one man. And you said we should ask Pakistan for permission. And if we had asked Pakistan permission, we would not have gotten him. And it was worth moving heaven and earth to get him.

You know, after we killed Bin Laden, I was at Ground Zero for a memorial and talked to a young woman who was four years old when 9/11 happened. And the last conversation she had with her father was him calling from the twin towers, saying, "Payton, I love you, and I will always watch over you." And for the next decade, she was haunted by that conversation. And she said to me, "You know, by finally getting Bin Laden, that brought some closure to me." And when we do things like that?when we bring those who have harmed us to justice, that sends a message to the world, and it tells Payton that we did not forget her father.

If you?ve ever seen a capital murder trial, you?ll recognize the genre to which this canned, gut-wrenching story belongs. Victim, bereft child, memory, justice, closure. It?s the speech a prosecutor delivers to get a death sentence from a jury. CNN?s dial group of undecided Florida voters loved this speech. The men trailed off, but the women stayed enthralled to the end.

The men gave Obama a bigger bump for his next answer. The question posed by Schieffer was what to do if the Afghan government is still unable to manage its security by the time our troops are supposed to leave. Again, Obama didn?t answer. Instead, he took this opportunity to argue that by the time he took office, ?We'd forgotten why we had gone. We went because there were people who were responsible for 3,000 American deaths. And so we decimated al-Qaida's core leadership in the border regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.? On the TV screen, the green line showing the emotional response of men in the dial group soared.

Again and again, it was Obama who spoke of righteousness, justice, and bringing the pain. He vowed to send China a ?clear signal that America is a Pacific power.? The men in the dial group surged with approval as Obama recalled going to Israel?s Holocaust museum to face ?the nature of evil.? He even won the contest over which candidate could pledge more often to impose ?crippling? sanctions on Iran. It was a tight race, but Obama pulled it out, 4-to-3.

No wonder the president capped the debate with a joke about horses and bayonets. Bayonets are for hand-to-hand combat. They?re for getting bogged down in a situation of prolonged peril. Obama has no interest in that. He?s a man of drones, not bayonets. He?s for using modern technology to administer, at minimal risk, the ancient rite of punishment. And, God help us, we love it.
