ECB on course to act strongly or disappoint mightily

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - European Central Bank President Mario Draghi must back up his pledge to do what it takes to protect the euro when the bank's policymakers meet on Thursday or else face deep disappointment from investors hungry for - and expecting - immediate action.

In his boldest comments to date, Draghi said last week that, within its mandate, the ECB was ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro, fuelling expectation the bank could revive its bond purchase program as it did a year ago when it started buying the government debt of Spain and Italy.

The talk has already lowered Italian and Spanish bond yields, and the extent to which markets are now primed for a move on Thursday was clearly spelt out in a Reuters poll.

Nineteen out of 24 money market traders said they expect the ECB to restart its mothballed bond-buying program with purchases of Spanish and Italian debt, with 10 out of 19 expecting it announce this on Thursday.

But such a step is far from certain, and the ECB may hold off to intervene in tandem with the euro zone's EFSF rescue fund.

Instead, the ECB could explore new policy tools such as outright asset purchases, or quantitative easing, which Britain, the United States and Japan are using to stimulate growth. There have also been recent suggestions that it could empower national central banks to broaden their asset buying abilities.

The ECB is under intense pressure from within and outside the euro zone to intervene and bring those governments' soaring borrowing costs under control as the debt crisis deepens and increasingly poses a risk to the global economy.

Reflecting the increased tension, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner flew on Monday to Germany, the euro zone's biggest economy and key to any euro rescue plan, and met Germany's finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.

After their meeting, on a remote North Sea island where Schaeuble interrupted a holiday, they issued a statement saying they were optimistic about reform efforts in the euro zone. Geithner later met Draghi in Frankfurt, but he left that meeting without comment, and no statement was issued.

The ECB chief will also meet Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann, a strong opponent of the ECB's government bond purchase program, ahead of Thursday's ECB meeting, a central bank source said.

The prospect of a stronger ECB crisis response drove Italy's 10-year funding costs below 6 percent for the first time since April at an auction on Monday, but fresh turmoil is likely if Draghi fails to convince investors on Thursday.

"With expectations running high, the scope for disappointment at Thursday's ECB policy meeting has increased considerably," said Nicholas Spiro at Spiro Sovereign Strategy.

SUMMER

The August meeting usually draws little attention and in fact the ECB used to skip the summer month's meeting until 2006 - the last year in which it took policy action in August.

The ECB could well break with tradition this year.

Huw Pill, economist at Goldman Sachs and a former senior ECB official, said the ECB could decide on Thursday to buy unsecured debt of bank or firms via the national central banks to address countries' individual weaknesses and to keep risks contained.

"We forecast the announcement of measures to permit national central banks to purchase private-sector assets under their own risk to implement ?credit easing', within a general framework approved by the Governing Council," Pill said.

"Such targeted measures offer a way of managing the consequences of (financial markets') segmentation for the private sector and real economy while maintaining the pressure for governments to act on fundamentals in a manner that reduces and ultimately eliminates the segmentation over time," he added.

The ECB has resisted so far stepping up its action for fear of taking away incentives for governments to implement tough reforms. Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the Eurogroup of euro zone finance ministers, said on Sunday euro zone leaders would work with the ECB to stabilize the euro.

The euro zone rescue fund could, for example, buy government bonds on the primary market, flanked by ECB purchases on the secondary market, media reports said last week. That way, any intervention would only come under certain conditions.

The ECB would like Europe's permanent ESM bailout fund to take over the bond purchases completely, but its limited size could make its intervention less effective.

One idea, favored by France, is to give the ESM access to ECB funding with a banking license. Austrian policymaker Ewald Nowotny said last week such a step had merits - breaking ranks with colleagues.

The Reuters poll showed 17 out of 24 money market traders expect the ESM to get a banking license.

Another cut in interest rates seems less likely as the ECB assesses the impact of its July rate cut to a new record low at 0.75 percent. At that meeting, the bank also decided to stop paying banks interest on their overnight deposits with it.

An earlier Reuters poll showed 44 out of 69 economists expect the ECB to cut rates again by year-end, with seven saying the bank would cut in August.

BIG BAZOOKA

Draghi's remarks last Thursday left many in the market wondering whether his message had been intended and if so how far the ECB would be prepared to go.

"If you had just landed from planet Mars, and this was the first time that you had heard the ECB speak on this issue, you might think that it was about to fire a big bazooka at sovereign bond markets," said David Mackie, economist at J.P. Morgan.

"But, having listened carefully to the central bank over the last two and a half years, we don't think that is about to happen," he added.

Draghi's candid remarks took some of his fellow Governing Council members by surprise, having not agreed with them before hand on the message he would send. This has prompted concerns Draghi may have raised false hopes in the market.

"Nothing new has been discussed (on action ECB could take), but Draghi is not a man to make comments lightly and at the end of the day he is the one calling the shots," said a euro zone central bank source. "There was always going to be a time when Draghi decided he had to act."

Another source said Draghi was not flagging an imminent move, and any action would likely come only in September or October, in conjunction with euro zone governments, and with a request from Spain for a bailout program, which Madrid was still trying to avoid.

Free up more time by revamping your laundry room routine ...

Today, time is an incredible luxury ? one that we too rarely have.

Between family responsibilities, work commitments and everyday stresses, it can often be hard to accomplish everything on the to-do list, let alone carve out time for oneself.? A mainstay on the to-do list has always been laundry, and with the average American household doing 7.5 loads per week, the time spent washing, drying and folding really adds up.

In fact, a significant number of women are making sacrifices to make time for laundry. American women find themselves neglecting exercise, family time and their social calendars, among other everyday tasks, because of the time they spend on laundry, according to results of a national survey conducted for LG Electronics USA. And, with the onset of summer, the work only multiplies ? from guest bedding and towels to sports uniforms and everyday clothing.

The good news is that there is freedom from the task that more than 77 percent of women describe as tedious and time consuming. With some simple tips from LG Head Home Economist Mike Wisner, you can make your laundry a faster and more efficient process. Pretty soon, all you?ll need to worry about is what to do with all your free time.

* Keep your laundry room organized. While it?s easy to let things pile up, keeping the room tidy and organized helps you save time by making sure that you know where all of the tools you need are located. Wisner advises keeping dryer goods separate from the items you need for the washing machine, and store ironing necessities in their own container. Check products periodically and re-stock before you run out ? having to run to the store for dryer sheets or even detergent at the last minute is something you want to avoid.

* Have the whole family do their part. Collecting clothes is a time-consuming task in itself, especially when unsorted clothes are left on the floor to pile up. Instead, encourage everyone in the family to put dirty clothes into hampers, which makes it easier to gather items that need to be washed. ?Another simple step is to provide everyone with two hampers ? one for whites and one for colors ? a time efficient way to sort,? Wisner suggests.

* Opt for a large-capacity washer. Getting more items into the washer equates to getting more done ? and faster. But overloading an outdated, standard model can leave you with clothes that aren?t fully clean. Today?s washers are better equipped for the job, and the new mega-capacity front-loader from LG is great for handling huge laundry tasks. ?It can accommodate a king-size bedding set, including a comforter, and its TurboWash technology ? which combines the ?spin? and ?rinse? cycles ? saves 20 minutes per load, even on larger loads,? he says.

* Re-examine how you dry. ?While a high-capacity dryer will help, there are also other ways to cut back on drying times,? Wisner says. Re-usable dryer balls can cut down on the time you need to keep items in the dryer and help to eliminate static. For items that aren?t dryer safe, keep a collapsible drying rack or retractable laundry line in your laundry room, so that you don?t need to take them outside or to a different part of the house. Turning on a dehumidifier as hanging items dry can speed up the process, too. And don?t forget to clean the lint from your machine following every load.

* Look at some of the newest innovations on the market and learn more about the ones you have. There are constant improvements to the stain-fighting and detergent categories: today?s stain sticks help to eliminate messy foods before they set while easy-dose laundry packets, like Tide Pods, make it easy to use the right amount of detergent per load. ?Also make sure you study the operating guide for your existing machine. Find out how often you should check hoses and filters and, most importantly, learn more about the benefits of using different cycles, speeds and temperatures,? notes Wisner. Make sure your washer is ENERGY STAR qualified, as this can save tons in energy and electricity bills.

?Get back a bit of your life,? says Wisner, ?with these simple solutions to reduce time spent in the laundry room.? For more ideas and tips, visit www.lg.com/us/washers.

Selling, Digital Marketing And Online Marketing | Web Design Box

Marketing, Digital Promoting or Internet Marketing? Best answers for marketers

One of the most engaging definitions in the web is about Marketing, Internet Marketing, Digital Promoting or Online Promoting.

Digital selling have been difinied as the employment of net connected devices to engage a consumer with net promoting in order to promote services and goods. Between others, but this definition can not be enough for the final client, and perhaps we?ll need a better definition.

Is the same online marketing that digital promoting? Is there any difference between Web Based Marketing and Digital promoting? We should analyze these ideas for finding the right answer.

Internet Based Promoting and Internet Marketing

Web Promoting is the selling developed online, while online marketing is the selling developed through Web. Marketing mix like price, product, promotion and placement is applied to Internet and all around the net. There?s a minimum margin between both concepts if there is a margin, so , most of times it's the same concept.

Online Markets are growing very fast and business through the nets are right now more than a mode.

Is promoting a good option for digital marketing consultants?

Selling is fine, and communication and technologies can be employed in association with one another. If someone wants to develop a campaign, digital marketing is a very interesting tool for digital marketing consultants.

In Selling an e-mail campaign can include a graphical advertisement or link to a content download, and in this sense it can enable a digital selling expert to take advantage of both sorts of promoting. It could be a good option.

Pull in Digital promoting, an interesting strategy for marketers

Pull digital marketing can be defined as follows:

  • The customer must actively seek the marketing content regularly via web searches; business is business. Also , the the recipient gave permission to receive content that's sent to the consumer by email, web feed, message or whatever Internet gadget.

Other examples of pull digital selling are also points for checking.

If we work with websites, we would count on streaming media like video, blogs, and articles with categorical targets or topics are a fantastic source to tug interested visitors where users link to the internet site to examine the content.

Push in Selling, caution with Spam!

Push Digital marketing have been definied as follows:

  • The Digital promoting Expert sends a message without the acceptance of the recipients, for example display advertising on websites and stories blogs. If consultants use this method, caution is the main word for developing those strategies.

If the recipient has not given authorization to receive the promotional message we can classify here text messages, blogs and web feeds.

It requires a extremely known name: Spam, and today spam is a very big problem.

Kidnapping not ruled out as woman and child missing... | Stuff.co.nz

CHARLES ANDERSON, NEIL REID AND VICTORIA ROBINSON Alyssa Barker

TAKEN: Toddler Alyssa Barker was taken from her Helensville home by an adult family friend.

MISSING: Alyssa Barker in the tights she was wearing at the time she was taken from her home.

A missing toddler was last night reunited with her parents after a desperate 36-hour search for her and her alleged abductor.

A woman responded to a nationwide appeal on Alyssa Barker's abduction after seeing pleas on last night's news and called police when her alleged kidnapper fell asleep.

Alyssa was taken from her Makudhrau home, near Kaukapakapa, north of Auckland, on Friday afternoon allegedly by Skye Mason, 27, who had been sleeping rough before being taken in by the toddler's good samaritan parents.

Another good samaritan in Swanson, West Auckland, took the pair in last night, and was responsible for reuniting the toddler with her family.

She watched the 6pm news last night and recognised the woman and child who were staying with her as Mason and Alyssa.

The woman waited until they were asleep and called the police at 9.15pm to notify them.

Alyssa was last night reunited with her parents, and 27-year-old Mason has been taken into police custody.

Police who attended the Swanson address say Alyssa is well and doesn't seem to be suffering any ill-effects as a result of her 36-hour absence from her home.

Detective Inspector Stan Brown of Waitakere Police said he and his staff were delighted to be able to return Alyssa to her family and very grateful to media for their support during what was a nervous search.

"This is one story that does not have a tragic end for a child and for that, we are very happy."

The toddler was moved around the Auckland area by her abductor, beginning in her home in Makudhrau, then was spotted 50km away in Glen Eden.

The Swanson home where she was finally found was another 10kms away.

Uniformed officers and about 30 search and rescue staff yesterday carried out door-to-door inquiries in Auckland, and also called in the Eagle and Westpac rescue helicopters in their search for the pair.

They were seen leaving the Makudhrau property about 3pm on Friday, and police said they had no idea how they travelled to Glen Eden, where seven hours later they visited the home of one of Mason's friends.

Police were called, but the pair had gone by the time they arrived at the property, and they had been unable to confirm a later sighting at Riverhead, north of Auckland.

Mason was living rough in the Rodney/Orewa area north of Auckland when Alyssa's family took her in. She stayed two days before vanishing with the toddler.

Alyssa's mother - who also has a three-month-old - was in the house when Mason, who has no immediate access to a car but has a small amount of money, left. Police have confirmed Mason has a history of mental illness and a small criminal history.

"She had been living a little bit rough and this family had taken her in for the last couple of days to try and look after her," Brown said. "They thought they were doing the right thing."

People who knew Mason about five years ago yesterday told the Sunday Star-Times she had been a good mother who took courses to try and improve her parenting, but had drifted into P use.

Last night Child, Youth and Family operations general manager Marama Edwards said Mason's own children were safe and well. "Our primary concern is for the safety and wellbeing of this little girl, and we urge Skye to return her safely - and to do it immediately."

Last night the father of Coral Burrows, who endured 10 days before his missing daughter was tragically found, pleaded to Mason to take Alyssa home.

Ron Burrows said it was every parent's nightmare. "Hand her back, I beg you," he said. "There is nothing worse than having your baby taken away. It is the ultimate nightmare." He said Alyssa's parents had tried to help someone out of the goodness of their hearts. "And then she has gone and done the unthinkable. I hate to think what they are going through. My heart goes out to them, but everyone is out there looking and the main thing is that everyone keeps an eye out for her."

Burrows said he had endured heartbreak when his six-year-old vanished from her home in the Wairarapa town of Featherston in 2003.

Coral's body was found 10 days later, and her stepfather, Steven Williams, was later convicted of her murder.

(AP) ? Jessica Ghawi was an aspiring sports journalist, a pretty, blue-eyed redhead who had survived a shooting at a Toronto mall only to be killed less than two months later in a massacre at a Colorado movie theater.

Matt McQuinn had just moved to Colorado from Ohio last fall with his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler. He saved Yowler in the same movie theater by diving in front of her and taking three bullets.

The two were strangers but forever will be linked in death as two of the 12 people killed during the midnight opening of "The Dark Knight Rises" just more than a week ago on July 20. Both will be laid to rest Saturday, McQuinn in his western Ohio hometown of Springfield and Ghawi in her hometown of San Antonio.

James Holmes, a 24-year-old former doctoral student studying neuroscience, is accused of opening fire on the theater, killing 12 people and injuring 58. He is due to be formally charged at a court hearing Monday in Colorado.

McQuinn, 27, was one of three men in the theater now being hailed as heroes for dying while shielding their girlfriends from gunfire.

McQuinn's girlfriend was shot in the knee and survived. It was unclear Friday whether she was well enough to attend the funeral.

Her 32-year-old brother, Nick Yowler, who also shielded his sister, wasn't injured.

Ghawi, a 24-year-old aspiring sports journalist who moved to Colorado about a year ago, survived a June 2 shooting at a Toronto mall that left two dead and several injured. She blogged about the experience, writing that it reminded her "how fragile life was."

"I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath," Ghawi wrote.

She was at the movie theater that night with her close friend, Brent Lowak.

Lowak's mother, Sue Greene, told reporters this week that the two were sitting in the sixth or seventh row when Lowak heard the hiss of gas.

Lowak and Ghawi ducked when they heard the sound, and Ghawi screamed as a bullet pierced her leg, Greene said.

Lowak ? who has been studying to become an emergency medical technician ? applied pressure to Ghawi's wound as she screamed. Lowak realized she had been shot again when she stopped screaming, and she was soon dead.

"Only then did he leave her," Greene said.

Lowak, who couldn't walk because he had been shot, crawled away and managed to find his way to a van taking victims to the hospital.

He took his first steps after the shooting on Sunday and told his mother that he desperately wanted to recover enough to attend his friend's memorial service. It was unclear Friday whether he was going to make it there.

Theatre productions The Prize, Endure and Born to Run bring sport to the Fringe

The Prize

Any Fringe show which takes a sporting theme in the same month as the Olympic Games arrive in London might be seen as belonging to the roster of gimmickry which inevitably assails Edinburgh in August. Yet speaking to the writers of three of the most high-profile such shows on this year?s bill, the majority of which were only coincidentally created in 2012, reveals a trio of works intended to get to the heart of what sporting endeavour tells us about the human condition.

?It?s easy to be cynical about the Olympics,? says Steve Gilroy, director and co-writer of The Prize, the only ostensible Games-themed show here, in which 28 aspiring and former Olympians were interviewed for a verbatim piece about their experiences. ?It?s quite openly a massive marketing exercise for GB Limited, and afterwards you can bet there will be all sorts of political analysis about how many billions it?s generated for the economy. It would be carping to say an economic benefit isn?t a good thing, but there?s a sense that the scale of sponsor control obscures the very fundamental values about taking part and achieving something individually.?

Recalling his interviewees, he speaks of a young woman from a village outside Nairobi who was paralysed by polio as a child, about a former miner from the North-East who was active in the strikes during the 1980s and young female rowers from Henley who have room for literally nothing in their life but training. He mentions Ali Jawad, the paralympian powerlifter who is afflicted by Crohn?s disease. ?He was advised by doctors that he could be risking his life and he shouldn?t compete, but he decided that wasn?t going to happen. For one of our contributors, an ex-policewoman who fell from a window on a routine burglary call, the prize is literally just being able to walk again.

?One thing we assume about Olympians is that they all have a level, considered, structured journey,? he continues, ?but for a lot of them it really isn?t, it?s incredibly precarious. Our narrator (and retired 400m sprint silver medallist) Roger Black talks about the incredibly fine line between ultimate performance and disaster through injury. So these stories are about essential relationships and aspirations, about breaking down where these sporting ideas exist more broadly in human experience.?

It?s a theme that?s echoed by Gary McNair, writer and director of the one-woman show Born to Run, which debuted earlier this year as part of the Play, a Pie and a Pint series of lunchtime shows at Glasgow?s Oran Mor and is presented here by the National Theatre of Scotland. Inspired by the story of epileptic ultrathon runner Diane Van Deren, it?s performed entirely by one actress running for an hour on a treadmill, and is once again about so much more than just the relatively simple act of exertion.

?Every now and then, you hear a story that just makes you want to write,? says McNair, although he points out this is a different story to Van Deren?s. ?Witnessing this woman running on stage, it puts into perspective the work that goes into it and the mechanics of the body going through it. I?m a big believer in sport and its ability to do things for good. A lot of people who came to Oran Mor the first time around have commented that they?ve been running every day since, or that they managed to get their 60-year-old dad to the gym, or that were reduced to tears. I can?t sit here and tell you it?s inspiring, but that was nice to hear. It?s a piece about what is achievable, and the incredible things you can do if you put your body and mind to it.?

Very similar in tone and in concept is Endure: A Run Woman Show, a site-specific piece which sees the audience follow creator and performer Melanie Jones on a run (although walking is an option, for those of less able body) while listening to her internal monologue on headphones. ?The idea came to me in 2006,? says Jones, ?when I was training for Iron Man Canada with six-hour bike rides and three-hour runs week after week. With that amount of time on the road I started observing myself, noticing that various emotional states would come up, vast extremes from rage to despair to existential bliss. Memories would emerge ? mile after mile layers were being stripped away, and something quite human was being revealed. As an artist, I observed this and realised it was rich ground to draw from.?

The show?s director Suchan Vodoor values the external effects of running as much as the internal. ?When you watch a movement for a long time,? he says, ?you observe detail and nuance in it, and in this particular moment the audience sees the beauty in a runner?s body, the aesthetic quality of it and the passion in even the simplest movements. I remember watching Melanie perform the show in a park in New York City, and there?s this path bisecting the field, and an elderly man walking on it. You can see how the weight of his body and his life have bent him over, and he?s walking very slowly, very methodically. While Melanie is running a distance of two kilometres in the show, he?s made it along maybe two metres, but in his body I could see the same effort. That moment captured something about the show for me, about the way everybody endures something.?

Jones finds this metaphorical quality hard to overstate. ?A marathon is going to be difficult,? she says. ?It?s a long way, there are going to be easy moments, there are going to be difficult moments. There will be moments when you don?t feel you can go on. That?s simply a tangible expression of what it means to be alive. The purpose of Endure in many ways is to validate the Monday morning when you wake up and you can?t face it, to validate a struggle that?s so internal it doesn?t get applauded. No-one?s there to cheer you on when you don?t know whether you can get through your work day or even out of bed, all the regular days that are just so damn hard.?

In McNair?s case, there?s one more equally resonant comparison to be made. ?If we had delivered exactly the same words in exactly the same phonetic way from somebody wrapped in tinfoil at the finish line,? he says, ?you would walk away without the same experience. In Born to Run you hear it when she starts to get tired, what that does to the voice, what happens to the body. You experience it yourself without even knowing it. That?s what makes theatre such a wonderful medium to work in, there are no tricks, no cuts, no different takes. You?re there and you?re cheering this person on. It?s just like sport.?

Golan Druse start to turn against Syria's Assad

BUKATA, Golan Heights (AP) ? The raging civil war just across the cease-fire line in Syria is posing an uncomfortable political choice for the Druse people in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

Do they maintain their traditional loyalty to the government of Bashar Assad, whose family has vowed to take back the territory? Or should they support the burgeoning Arab revolt against Assad's harsh rule?

In the shifting sands of the Middle East, the Druse again find themselves a people caught in the middle.

In Druse villages close enough to hear the fighting, families and friends are divided between backers of the revolt and supporters of the regime. A Druse doctor predicted his people would demand Assad's downfall, while a butcher in a nearby town denounced the Syrian uprising as a foreign conspiracy.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. In 1981 it annexed the strategic plateau, 65 kilometers (40 miles) long and 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide, because militarily, it commands Israel's north. The international community has not recognized the Israeli annexation. In negotiations, Israel has offered to exchange the territory for full peace, but talks broke down a decade ago over exact borders and other issues.

The Druse residents of the Golan Heights were offered Israeli citizenship, but only a few accepted. Many assumed that someday the territory would revert to Syria, by peace or by war, and those who identified with Israel might be treated as traitors.

The Druse ? there are 20,000 in the Golan Heights ? follow a secretive offshoot of Islam whose adherents live primarily in Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Over the centuries, they have tried to keep to themselves, offering allegiance to whoever was in control of their territory.

The four main Golan Druse villages are near the cease-fire line with Syria. In the early weeks of the uprising against Assad last year, Golan's Druse staunchly lined up behind him. Now new voices are being heard.

"Most of the people here cannot distinguish between Assad and their homeland. They are looking to him as the face of the homeland and waiting for him to liberate us from the (Israeli) occupation," said Ali Abu Awad, a doctor in the village of Bukata. "But these days, when they can see what Assad is doing there, the big lie has started to fall. I think they will demand the fall of Assad."

Over the past week, he said most people in Bukata have climbed nearby hills to watch the fighting nearby.

"It's a different feeling to see with your eyes. You feel very useless, very empty, to see this army demolishing the civilian population," Abu Awad said.

In nearby Majdal Shams, Assad supporters spoke out.

Hasan Fakhr Deen, a butcher, called the Syria conflict "a conspiracy of outside states."

He insisted that Syrians remained united and felt the nearby shelling and smoke across the border were legitimate attacks against "people who want to change the regime in Syria."

Besides its strategic importance, the Golan Heights are also a major source of water and recreation. Israelis flock there for hikes, an Israeli winery and the country's only ski resort.

The Druse are a part of that landscape, and Israeli tourists as well as soldiers frequent their restaurants.

Still, the Druse stay in touch with their Syria relatives and are sometimes allowed to cross over for weddings, university studies and religious pilgrimages. Golan-grown apples are also annually transferred over land to Syria to help Druse farmers market their crop.

The bloody crackdown in Syria has led the Golan Druse to begin speaking more freely.

Mahmoud Amasha, a Bukata apple farmer and insurance agent, said he was "convinced that the number of people opposing this regime grows every day."

But he said divisions over Assad's popularity in Bukata have "cast a shadow over the people in this town."

Syria's Sunni majority makes up the backbone of the opposition, and minorities such as the Druse and Christians fear they will be marginalized ? or even targeted ? if Sunnis take over.

Assad and the ruling elite also belong to a minority sect, the Alawites, a Shiite offshoot. Assad's regime always pushed a secular ideology, which was seen as giving minorities a measure of protection.

Residents say demonstrations break out every few weeks, some in favor of the regime and some against. The divisions have even pitted family against family and friend against friend.

Three teenage girls walking through Bukata's central square held differing views, with two supporting Assad and one opposing him.

Ruba Amasha, 17, said the three have remained friends, but that is not always the case.

"For instance, a pro-Assad person will say 'hi' to a friend on the street, and if the other person's against (Assad), they'll just keep walking," she said.

Alaa Alwely, a driver, said the Syrian civil war would likely delay any chance of the Golan returning to Syria. Given what was happening across the border, he said he was fine with that.

"I've lived a respectful life here," he said. "I was born under occupation. I'm not sure if Syrian rule would be better or not."

Judge delays trial for father of missing Iowa girl

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) ? A judge has delayed a drug and domestic abuse trial on charges pending against the father of one of two missing Iowa cousins.

District Judge Andrea Dryer on Friday pushed back the trial date for four criminal cases pending against Daniel Morrissey until Aug. 28.

The cases had been scheduled for trial Tuesday, but the judge told Morrissey she understood why "recent events" made it difficult for him to prepare his defense.

Morrissey is the father of 10-year-old Lyric Cook, who vanished July 13 with her 8-year-old cousin Elizabeth Collins after they left to ride bikes in Evansdale.

Morrissey declined comment as he left the courthouse Friday.

He has come under scrutiny because of his links to the region's methamphetamine trade but isn't considered a suspect in the girls' disappearance.

How To Find The Perfect Spot For Trout Fishing | Wordy Writing

Fishing is a great recreation and sport that is loved internationally. If you want to experience nature, there?s no better way than by fishing. It can be seen as a nice way to get together with others or can be enjoyed by yourself. Read this article to learn some great fishing tips.

Learning about how different fish react to different temperatures is a great tip to use when fishing. Different types of fish like different temperatures. So if you are fishing for a particular type of fish, you should know what temperature the fish thrives in. Different types of fish prefer different water temperatures, so you must be prepared accordingly. By staying alert to the temperatures, you will have better luck in your fishing!

It is important that you know the fishing rules and regulations in an area. Some areas regulate the size and number of fish you can keep, how many poles are permitted on your boat, and the number of hooks that can be on a given pole. There can be tough penalties if you are caught breaking these rules, even unawares.

If you are netting your fish, position the net so that the fish?s head enters the net first. This will help protect the fish and its fins from being damaged by the net. Try supporting the net with two hands so a fish doesn?t jerk up into the water.

Use more bait or larger lures for larger fish. Yes, it might seem obvious, but it is overlooked most of the time. Bigger fish will see the larger bait as a good meal for it to eat and will take advantage of the opportunity. Smaller fish may not approach larger bait, so the odds of getting a bigger fish improve!

You do not have to keep every single fish you catch. If you land smaller fish, or an abundance of larger fish, you should consider releasing them back into the water. By controlling how many fish are removed from a lake, you will help to ensure a plentiful supply of fish for the future.

If you are not having any luck fishing, stick it out. Patience is the most important virtue when it comes to fishing. When checking out a new location to fish, cast your line out for around 30 minutes before you make a decision on the potential of this spot. There are a lot of things that might affect fishing in the area you select. These factors include moving too much and choosing the best time of the day.

Cleaning a fish is really simple. You need a cutting table and small knife. Make an incision in the fish?s belly that stretches from the fish?s head to its tail. Cut the fish?s head and pull it off while you remove its organs by pulling in the opposite direction. Your fish will be open and clean.

If you are out fishing with a friend, remove your line from the water when they catch something, and have them do the same when you have a fish on the line. Your lines will remain uncrossed in this way, and you will also be free to lend a helping hand to your buddy.

You need appropriate sunscreen when you go fishing. In addition to the sun you are exposed to from above, the sun?s UV rays are also reflected off of the water. This multiplies the UV rays that your skin is exposed to while fishing. It is recommended to apply a sunscreen with at least a SPF 15 every hour.

For those who don?t want to fish for food or sport, catch and release the fish. To do this, you just need to remove the hook from any fish you catch, then return it to the water. Releasing the fish back into the wild gives the entire population a chance to grow, which means more chances for you to catch fish in the future.

Practice is the most important tool a fly fisherman can use. Casting a fly rod is a fairly complicated technique that must be practiced over and over to be perfected. Over time, you will notice a marked improvement in your form and accuracy.

Chart fish migration habits in order to decide whether to fish downhill or uphill at a given time of the year. If the fish are going upstream in the spring, you would cast ahead of them as they go ?uphill?. Conversely, in the fall, when fish are swimming downstream, you should cast downhill.

Hopefully this article has provided you with some good tips that you can use on your next fishing outing. There is a lot of knowledge available about fishing, so you can always continue studying fishing and refining your fishing skills.

Medical marijuana hub Los Angeles moves to ban dispensaries

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles City Council decided unanimously on Tuesday to ban all storefront medical marijuana shops, in a blow to a industry that operates in violation of federal law but has become the largest collection of pot dispensaries in California.

The 14-0 vote by the council comes after conflicting court decisions on how far local jurisdictions in California can go in cracking down on the cannabis shops. Some observers say the issue could end up before the state's Supreme Court.

The state's voters in 1996 became the first to allow the drug as medicine, which inspired dispensaries to open.

Seventeen states and the District of Columbia now allow medical marijuana, but the federal government holds that pot is a dangerous and illegal narcotic and has shut down dispensaries in several states.

Even in Los Angeles, where some officials support the right of patients with cancer or AIDS to have easy access to the drug, city leaders have sought for years to control dispensaries amid complaints about acrid smoke around very profitable, neon-lit storefronts that critics say supply recreational users. And parents have expressed worries their children are being drawn to pot.

There are some 750 registered dispensaries in Los Angeles and as many as 200 more without proper registration, officials said. That dwarfs the number of dispensaries in any other California city and possibly makes Los Angeles the king of medical pot shops in the nation. Denver, by comparison, has hundreds of pot shops and the San Francisco Bay area has over a dozen.

Under the measure approved by the council, regulated and illegal dispensaries would be asked to shut down within 30 days of the measure having been signed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who supports the ban.

"Relief is coming in the form of having a more focused and intense crackdown on these dispensaries that cause problems in our neighborhoods," said Councilman Jose Huizar. "If we try to move forward to regulate (storefronts), we will fail. It would be an exercise in futility."

EXPANDING FIGHT

Even as the medical marijuana industry has faced a number of setbacks in recent years, supporters of full legalization are widening their confrontation with the Obama administration.

Residents of Washington state, Colorado and Oregon are set to vote in November on ballot measures seeking to allow the drug for recreational use, in spite of the federal ban.

Christopher Koontz, planning deputy for Los Angeles Councilman Paul Koretz, said he expects the dispensary community will challenge the ban with a lawsuit, as it did over the city's past attempts to control the shops.

The city has been unable to collect sales tax from the pot shops, losing out on millions of dollars, he said.

Earlier this month, a state appeals court ruled Los Angeles County could not ban dispensaries in areas outside cities that the county government controls.

The ruling was one of a number of conflicting decisions by judges, and the California Supreme Court is expected within about a year to settle the controversy with a ruling on the ability of local jurisdictions to control the medical pot shops.

Police Chief Charlie Beck said the Los Angeles ban is needed because the city's dispensaries have a "toxic mixture of high-level narcotics and high amounts of cash."

In supporting the dispensaries, physician and caregiver Jeff Thompson said the ban would prevent "safe access to medicine." "Don't force people to go the black market and increase crime," he said.

The measure adopted by the council was described by supporters as a "soft ban" because it would allow two or three patients to grow and share cannabis in homes or apartments, but not storefronts.

"I think this idea that three people can get together and grow (pot) ... is a bit disingenuous," said Lynne Lyman, California state director for the Drug Policy Alliance, which has backed pot legalization efforts.

The average person won't have the wherewithal to do it. "I don't have time to grow carrots and lettuce for my family," Lyman said.

Seacrest to Carey: 'You'll fit right in' at 'Idol'

By Randee Dawn

Simon Cowell may think Mariah Carey is too "sweet" for the rigors of "American Idol" judging, but that's not Ryan Seacrest's take on it at all.

"I actually called her last night and I said, 'So welcome to the family,'" the "Idol" host, who is assisting NBC with its Olympic coverage, told TODAY's Matt Lauer in London Thursday. "I said, 'What are you going to be like on the show? She said, 'You know how I am: I'm very honest. I say what I'm thinking.' I said, 'Great. You'll fit right in.'"

Carey will be taking the seat of departed Jennifer Lopez, and Seacrest said, "We're sad to see her go." But the big question now is who will take over the chair once occupied so flamboyantly by Steven Tyler.?
