I feel two ways about potlucks. On one hand, they're the only sensible way for a big group to gather and eat together. In all my magazine-reading (have I mentioned how much I love magazines? The paper kind?), I often come across "Easy do-ahead party menus!" that look atrocious. More work than I have ever put into having anyone over in my life. Maybe each step is technically easy, but you'd still have to be unemployed (or have a kitchen staff), hyper organized, and love cooking to pull it off. So potlucks solve this problem.

However, sometimes too many potlucks stack up in one week, and I find they are just as much work (or more) than what I would have made for my family that night. And I have occasionally cursed potlucks, though please don't tell anyone. Puget Sounders are supposed to love them. Always.

I adore people that bring a hot, main dish to potlucks. People with crockpots (I gave mine away as it was suffering from disuse), people with those handy Rubbermaid sets with thermal jackets. If you're one of those, thank you! Keep doing your thing!

As for me and my house, we will supply the salad. It's usually something like this one ? brown rice and kale salad with cranberries and pecans. Here's my reasoning:

1. It's vegan and gluten free. And I label it as such.?

2. It's filling. Though I'm not a main dish super hero (God bless?you!) it's conceivable that someone could eat a load of this and feel fairly satisfied.

3. It's delicious. Have I ever let you down? (Don't chime in if I have. I know readers have slaved over some recipes and been ruinously disappointed. I'm sorry!)

4. It is best served room temperature. (Potluck royalty!)

5. It can sit in its vinaigrette forever and just get better. You don't have to worry about it getting soggy.

6. Crazily, I usually have everything I need for a version of this salad -- grains, greens, homemade vinagrette. If you wash and dry kale and put it in a ziploc bag in the fridge, it lasts a really long time. (Though it gets gobbled up around here. Along with a latte and Triscuits, it's the food I eat almost every day.)

7. It looks bright and beautiful with the macerated cranberries and the green kale. There's never any left.

The very first recipe I posted was something similar ? Barley and kale salad with dried cherries and blue cheese. I had taken it to my Mom's birthday party and been accosted with requests for the recipe.

I prided myself on always delivering recipes (handwritten and cobbled together from memory) to people who asked for them, but had the idea of putting it online to save my fingers from so much work. I made up the name on-the-spot, and I've always been glad I didn't think it about it much. Otherwise it wouldn't have happened. (I have a couple dear friends who are contemplating ? and contemplating some more! ?the idea starting a blog. Just get out there. We'll all be better for it.)

Kale and brown rice salad with cranberries and pecans

You could use white rice, barley, quinoa ... so many other grains here. The important thing is that it's had a chance to cool down a little bit so the grains can separate. If you can't cook it ahead of time and chill it, just spread it out in a very shallow layer, drizzle a little bit of olive oil over it, and stir it occasionally to release the steam.

4 cups cooked grain (I made brown rice in my rice cooker the day before)

1 large bunch curly green kale, de-stemmed, washed, dried, and coarsely chopped

1/2 cup toasted pecans, coarsely chopped

2 tablespoons honey

salt and pepper

2 garlic gloves

4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup olive oil?

1/2 red onion, thinly sliced?

1/2 cup dried cranberries

For dressing

Combine honey, salt and pepper, garlic, vinegar, and olive oil with an immersion blender. (Or with a whisk if you use a garlic press.) Add more of anything to taste. Drop the sliced onions and dried cranberries into the dressing to marinate.

To assemble salad

In a large bowl, combine rice, kale, and dressing. I use my hands. Make sure everything is covered with the vinaigrette. That's what makes this salad. Scatter the toasted pecans over the top and maybe a little more coarse salt and pepper.?

Then tried the restore suggestion and it did work, however, even with a different name on the file, it saved the file over my current file. Fortunately I had made a backup. I have never had issues prior to converting to 2012, but at least I can backup and restore thanks to your suggestions. Too bad I can't go back to 2006--I really regret leaving that version. DENVER ? A man who worked as a society writer at the Rocky Mountain News died Thursday.

Thomas Hardy was at Denver Health Medical Center undergoing treatment for smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning from a fire at his home in the 300 block of Downing St.

Hardy was 68-years-old.

Firefighters pulled him out of the burning house in the Country Club neighborhood early Tuesday and paramedics rushed him to the hospital.

His two dogs died in the fire.

Hardy wrote about Denver?s cultural events and the movers and shakers in the society circles during the 1980s. He also did fund raising and consulting work for various nonprofit organizations.

Who benefits from big biology projects?

SINCE 1980, biology has burgeoned from a small-scale discipline in academic labs to a science lavishly funded by governments and industry. The transition hit its stride with the human genome project, then came stem cell research and now there is heavy investment in neurobiology. The people behind these big projects promised a better future, cures for humanity's ills and a new way to think about ourselves and society.

In this salutary history, Hilary and Steven Rose ask what has become of these claims. They provide the answer by showing how, time after time, the promises turned out to be empty.

The much-hyped medical hopes for genomics failed to materialise as disease proved to be more complex than the misbehaviour of one or two genes. And now the claims for neurobiology look similarly shaky, say the authors, who are veteran warriors in the debate over nature versus nurture in the development of the mind. And yet this kind of research continues.

According to the Roses, it is largely the corporate super-rich - big pharma, venture capitalists and a select group of the academic elite - who benefit from all this effort.

In a few places the book could spell out more clearly the harm that comes from big biology projects or how this kind of research might be done differently. Just because the initial hype proved unfounded, that does not necessarily mean the science was wrong or that it will never deliver.

That said, there is a lot of good history and philosophy here - all the more valuable because the hype is so much louder.

Davenport died in 2009 but his monuments are all around us - including the two skyscrapers he helped to save in the 1970s. With climate change making violent storms like Sandy more common, the story of the wind wizard has never been more relevant.

Real estate professionals need to be aware of the following 10 important tips.

1) If, during any five year period, an individual has owned and used their home as a main residence for a period of at least two years, any gain from the sale can be excluded from income. If it has only been a partial residence, it won?t qualify.

?

2) If a main residence is sold, $250,000 of the individual gain, or $500,000 of the joint gain, may be excluded from income. This of course depends on the other factors covered in this article.

?

3) If an individual has sold another home during the two-year period prior to the date of the current home, they will not be eligible for the full tax exclusion. You will be eligible for a partial return, however. One simple rule of thumb: Only sell one home per year if at all possible.

?

4) If all of the gain can be legally excluded, it is not necessary to report the sale of the home on a tax return. This is good because it won?t raise any red flags with the IRS if you sold it for a lucrative price.

?

5) If a gain cannot be excluded, however, it does need to be reported on Form 1040, Schedule D, and taxes will apply to that gain. It?s not the best situation, but it?s the law. If you ignore it, you?re risking being audited by the IRS.

?

6) Obviously, a loss from the sale of a main home cannot be used as a deduction. This has been more prevalent of a problem since the 2008 recession, when the housing market crashed.

?

7) If you?re having a tough time calculating your taxes, there is plenty of tax software and worksheets out there that can help you once your taxes are due. IRS Publication 523 ? Selling Your Home, makes these all readily available.

?

8) Individuals or couples with two homes can only exclude gains from only one of the residences. Even if both homes are occupied a portion of the year, one must be designated as the main home. Only a gain on the sale of the main home can be excluded from taxes on gains. If the other home is sold and a gain results, then no deductions are allowed. Again, this is the ?one house per year? rule of thumb.

?

9) If a first-time homebuyer credit has been received, there are special rules concerning the tax implications of gains. Again, IRS Publication 523 addresses these concerns. These credits help young, first-time homebuyers buy a house and were put into place to help stimulate the real estate market.

?

10) Anyone who moves must be sure to update their address with the IRS. They should use Form 8822 to do this. If the IRS doesn?t have your new address, you might be sent a letter of notice. If you can?t receive that letter, you could be in trouble.

?

Although all information about taxable real estate gains is readily available from the IRS, real estate professionals should frequently update their knowledge about this subject to ensure they are following everything according to the books.

LONDON (AP) -Rafael Benitez is being coy about his chances of staying at Chelsea beyond the end of the season, insisting Thursday that his main ambitions as interim coach were to "win trophies and play good football."

The 52-year-old Spaniard was hired by the European champions on a seven-month contract Wednesday following the abrupt firing of Roberto Di Matteo.

Many believe Benitez is merely a short-term fix ahead of the likely hiring next summer of Pep Guardiola, the reported No.1 target of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Benitez says "I don't care about the short-term (deal), what I have in my head is to win every game . we will see what happens."

Benitez says he has landed the "perfect" job but hasn't yet spoken to Abramovich.

Energy efficient windows ? Home Improvement: House Plans

I must change the windows of my home. My old windows aren't bad looking. But although they go well with the house and I still like them, they are lacking the much needed energy efficiency. Heating and cooling my home takes five times longer than it is supposed to. I talked to the contractor that I always use, and after inspecting them, he told me that is time for windows upgrade. Because I really like the window design I have, I went in search for the similar window style only with a better energy efficiency index. I found something that looks promising at the Nitro Windows store my next door neighbor suggested. I?ll see soon enough how they will do.?

It's official. Twinkies are toast, at least as far as being a Hostess product is concerned.

Hostess CEO Gregory Rayburn testified at a bankruptcy hearing Wednesday that he will have to terminate 15,000 employees, effective right away, after a last-ditch mediation session failed Tuesday night to find agreement between the unions and Hostess Brands.

The liquidation hearing to save more than 18,000 jobs at the iconic baker resumed?Wednesday morning in White Plains, N.Y., bankruptcy court.?U.S. Bankruptcy?Judge Robert Drain started the proceedings by underlining that the mediation?talks would remain secret.

"I'm sure that many present here would like to know what happened," he said.?"Mediations cannot be effective unless the parties can do so candidly."

After all the aggression and acrimony, was there any way to bridge the chasm? Was there any hope? Or was it more?hard-nosed?negotiating, bluffs, and brinkmanship?

"It's clear to me that all parties participated in good faith," said?Drain. "It's a free country. People are free not to agree."

"Sadly," said the judge. "We must proceed to liquidation."

The announcement last week that the company would need to liquidate after a strike by workers that the company said crippled its business, consumers cleared store shelves of Hostess products, especially Twinkies, out of fear they would never taste the spongy, yellow cakes again.

There could be a silver lining in this Twinkie tale. Hostess bankers testified to a "flood" of inquiries into buying Hostess brand names from other food makers, from stores and supermarkets, including Wal-Mart, and from investment interests.

According to testimony by a Hostess Brands advisor,?many of the interested buyers have asked if they could keep some of the workers employed?in the factories.

To keep value for the brands, including Twinkies, Ho Hos, Sno Balls and Wonder bread, the buyers need to move as fast as possible.?That could mean keeping jobs for as seamless a transition as possible.

In the meantime, 15,000 employees need to be terminated immediately, Rayburn testified, "so that they can qualify for unemployment."

Indiana, Louisville still 1-2 in AP poll

Indiana is still a runaway No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll and Louisville is again a solid second. Then come the changes, with Kentucky dropping five spots to eighth.

The Hoosiers (3-0) receive 46 first-place votes Monday from the 65-member national media panel. The Cardinals (5-0) get the other 19 No. 1 votes.

Ohio State and Michigan both move up one place to third and fourth, while Duke, which beat Kentucky, jumps from ninth to fifth. Syracuse, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina and Arizona round out the Top Ten.

New model reveals how huddling penguins share heat fairly

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? Penguins that face the bitter cold and icy winds of Antarctica often huddle together in large groups for warmth during storms. Mathematicians at the University of California, Merced created a model of penguin huddles that assumes each penguin aims solely to minimize its own heat loss. Surprisingly, the model reveals that such self-centered behavior results in an equitable sharing of heat.

The results are published in the online journal PLOS ONE and the researchers will discuss their findings at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society's (APS) Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD), held Nov. 18 -- 20 in San Diego, Calif.

Penguins aren't a typical study subject for Francois Blanchette, an applied mathematician at UC Merced who focuses on fluid dynamics. However, after seeing penguin huddles in the movie "The March of the Penguins" Blanchette realized that the important factors that shaped the huddle, including wind and heat flow, fell within his area of expertise.

Blanchette and his fellow researchers, Arnold Kim and Aaron Waters, modeled huddles packed so tightly that only the penguins on the outside could move. Each penguin in the huddle generated heat that the wind blew away. By considering such factors as the number of penguins in the huddle and the strength and turbulence of the wind, the model calculated which penguin on the outside of the huddle was coldest. The coldest penguin moved to the most sheltered spot available, usually relocating from a windward to a leeward position, and then the heat distribution around the huddle was recalculated. Repeated iterations showed the huddle gradually elongating and creeping downwind over time.

At first the model assumed perfectly steady wind patterns and identical penguins, but produced huddle shapes that were longer and thinner than those observed in nature. When the researchers added uncertainty, which could represent irregular wind eddies and natural differences in the size and cold tolerance of individual penguins, the modeled huddles closely matched real huddles.

The researchers were surprised the model showed the penguins shared warmth nearly equally among themselves. "Even if penguins are only selfish, only trying to find the best spot for themselves and not thinking about their community, there is still equality in the amount of time that each penguin spends exposed to the wind," says Blanchette. Not all instances of selfish behavior result in such fair outcomes, he notes. "A penguin huddle is a self-sufficient system in which the animals rely on each other for shelter, and I think that is what makes it fair. If you have some kind of obstacle, like a wall, then I think it would stop being fair," Blanchette says.

Currently the researchers would like feedback from biologists before they further refine the model. Gathering experimental data, however, is difficult. "Penguins huddle during blizzards, when the conditions are horrible, and if you're going to collect data you're also going to be in a blizzard in horrible conditions," Blanchette points out. The mathematicians hope their work might serve as a guide for scientists in the field, helping them to know which observations to make to test the model.

Blanchette says his group may also investigate how to adapt the model to describe other biological organisms, such as certain bacteria, that move as a group in response to an outside stimulus like food or the presence of a toxin. Eventually, concepts from the model may guide the design of swarming robots that shelter each other in harsh conditions. But for now Blanchette is enjoying a more immediate side benefit of the research: "Nearly everybody seems to love penguins and not enough people love math," he says. "If we use math to study penguins we could potentially teach more people to love math too!"

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will miss Sunday's game vs. the Washington Redskins due to the effects of a concussion.

Rookie Nick Foles, who replaced Vick during the 38-23 loss to Dallas on Sunday, and who practiced with the first team all week, will get his first NFL start in a battle of 3-6 teams fighting to save their seasons.

Philadelphia coach Andy Reid made the announcement Friday at the team's practice facility, confirming a decision that had been in the works since Monday. It was only because Vick had not completed the league-mandated concussion testing earlier in the week, that Reid did not officially rule him out until the team's final practice.

Head trainer Rick Burkholder spoke to the media on the field after the announcement.

"With concussions, they're all different," Burkholder said. "We needed to take it day by day. His two concussions he's had with us have been different."

Vick, who completed just six passes for 70 yards vs. Dallas, did not practice all week.

"He has too many symptoms for us to even exercise him," Burkholder said. "He's not even close to playing this week."

Foles was 22 of 32 for 219 yards with a touchdown and an interception vs. the Cowboys. Those numbers weren't enough to help the Eagles avoid their fifth straight loss, a first in Reid's 14 seasons.

Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has tightened the playbook a bit this week for Foles, a third-round draft pick out of Arizona, who became something of a fan favorite in Philadelphia during an impressive run through the preseason.

"He will see some things that he hasn't seen before, and how he reacts to those things will be key," Mornhinweg said. "That would be the two biggest things right at the front of my mind that we've talked about."

In a dreary season that has fallen well short of expectations, seeing if Foles can show enough flashes to become a franchise quarterback has put some snap back in the Eagles' year.

"There's quite a bit of excitement, I think, in in this situation because of a couple of things," Mornhinweg said. "Number one, the situation we're in. Can we get it done and make a run here? Secondly, with a rookie quarterback there is certainly some excitement there."

Mornhinweg knew Foles would be a good fit in the Eagles offense, when they scouted him, and was more than happy to see him fall to Philadelphia when he did.

"He's big, has a big arm," Mornhinweg said. "I thought he carried Arizona as best as he could. They really had problems personnel-wise and injury-wise. He's tough, both physically and mentally."

Vick has been inconsistent ? at best ? the last two seasons. After helping to rally the Eagles from a 4-8 start last season with four consecutive victories to close the year, he has thrown for 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions this season, and compiled a rating of just 79.2.

As for this weekend, Burkholder said Vick simply needs rest, and the process now will include getting him "in dark, quiet places."

EU drug regulator OKs Novartis' meningitis B shot

LONDON (AP) ? Europe's top drug regulator has recommended approval for the first vaccine against meningitis B, made by Novartis AG.

There are five types of bacterial meningitis. While vaccines exist to protect against the other four, none has previously been licensed for type B meningitis. In Europe, type B is the most common, causing 3,000 to 5,000 cases every year.

Meningitis mainly affects infants and children. It kills about 8 percent of patients and leaves others with lifelong consequences such as brain damage.

In a statement on Friday, Andrin Oswald of Novartis said he is "proud of the major advance" the company has made in developing its vaccine Bexsero. It is aimed at children over two months of age, and Novartis is hoping countries will include the shot among the routine ones for childhood diseases such as measles.

Novartis said the immunization has had side effects such as fever and redness at the injection site.

Recommendations from the European Medicines Agency are usually adopted by the European Commission. Novartis also is seeking to test the vaccine in the U.S.

Twitter, whose ranks are already stuffed with former Googlers, has hired another one: Nicole Wong, who left the search engine last year after nearly eight years as Google's chief fighter against Internet censorship.

She's joining a legal department run by a former colleague, Alex Macgillivray, who left Google to join Twitter in 2009.

Twitter, like Google, has wrestled with issues of censorship. It recently instituted the ability to suppress posts broadcast on the information network country by country to comply with local laws while keeping information available where it's legal.

Besides her professional role, censorship appears to be an issue of personal concern to wong. Rap-reality TV star sits in on Hawks broadcast

ATLANTA (AP) ? T.I. added a new line to his expanding resume ? broadcaster.

The Grammy Award-winning rapper and reality television joined the Atlanta Hawks' broadcast team Friday night for the first half of their 95-89 loss to the NBA champion Miami Heat.

"This was a phenomenal opportunity," said T.I., proud that the Hawks built a 46-42 lead during his time on air for SportsSouth. "I really enjoyed myself. I look forward to the next time and doing an entire game."

After several bouts with the law, including a stint in federal prison on weapons charges, the Atlanta native has become active in the community and frequently attends Hawks' games. He sat at courtside between play-by-play man Bob Rathbun and analyst Duane Ferrell.

"They did all the heavy lifting," said the rapper, who was wearing several gold chains and an old-school Hawks cap. "I just chimed in here and there. I have a close relationship, both personally and professionally, with a lot of the guys out there."

Asked if he had any desire to buy a piece of the Hawks, following the path set by hip-hop star and Brooklyn Nets part-owner Jay-Z, T.I. just smiled.

"I would love to be a part of the organization in whatever way possible if I can make a significant contribution," said the entertainer, whose actual name is Clifford Harris. "But there's no pressure. Baby steps."

T.I. gave a hint of new album, "Trouble Man," which is scheduled for release on Dec. 18. It includes collaborations with Andre 3000, Cee Lo Green and Pink.

"I'm extremely proud of it," he said. "I put a lot of work and energy into it. I think it will be the classic album the fans have been wanting me to make. ... I wanted to mix it up. I wanted to raise the bar on what's considered stellar material."

He also stars with his wife in "T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle," a reality show on VH1. Camera crews from the show trailed him around Philips Arena.

T.I. is hopeful about the Hawks, who overhauled their roster during under offseason in hopes of breaking a history of postseason failures.

"This is a new team, a young team," he said. "They have a lot of heart, a lot of desire, a lot of talent that can take them deep in the playoffs."

As for his own athletic prowess, T.I. was frank about his abilities.

There was none of the boastfulness one might hear on his songs.

"I have no organized sports background," he said. "I've done a lot of watching. I'm a professional spectator. I can observe like no one's business."

?This Wednesday, Barbara Will Have my Kidney?.FINALLY!

A year and a half ago I blogged about donating my kidney to my sister-in-law Barbara, who was very close to kidney failure. Active Rain even sent me a beautiful "tree of life" pendant showing how much they truly care about thier members!

What I didn?t know at the time was that Barbara's Creatinine level could and did level off just above kidney failure.

Then I felt like my life was on hold as I waited for Barbara to go into kidney failure. This was also extreamly hard on Barbara and our bond only grew. A year went by and all my tests (termed the president?s physical) expired. I never wavered in commitment to donate my kidney, but this made things more complicated. ?

So many people asked, ?Did you ever donate your kidney?? It was hard to explain something I didn?t fully understand other than to say Barbara?s stable right now. It was difficult to plan vacations because there was no way of knowing when Barbara would need my kidney.

Last month I received THE CALL from my donor coordinator that it was time. Still, I said nothing, not even to my parents because I wasn?t going to make the same mistake twice.

I rushed through 3 days of tests (EKG, EEG, Cat Scan, MRI, Chest X-Ray, blood tests, 24 hour urine collection, pap smear, mammogram, stress test - I think the testing may be harder than the surgery!) Fortunately for me and Barbara I?m in exceptional health. Good to know because I'm of the mindset if it's not broke don't fix it and never get physicals!

It?s FINALLY time to donate my kidney to Barbara and the surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, November 14^th at 6:00 a.m.

I am so happy to save Barbara?s life, ensuring her two children have a mother. Their father (my husband?s brother) passed away 6 years ago (that?s a whole other tragic story) and their mother is all they have. I?m feeling a little emotional and excited to get on with the surgery.

I've come to love and cherish Barbara even more as we've both been through so much this last year and a half and always had each other's backs.

I look forward to watching Barbra get healthier every day and for all of us to move on and live normal, (or at least our version of "normal") lives.

The St. Barnabas' Living Donor Institute has been wonderful, treating me like an angle. The truth is 90% of patients either struggle on dialysis for years waiting for a cadaver?s kidney or die on the waiting list. Living donors are very rare.

I can?t imagine NOT saving someone's life when I will live a perfectly healthy and normal life! I am no hero! I was given an opportunity to save a life and that is the greatest gift you can give someone which in turn is a precious gift for me.

This surgery is fairly simple with a quick recovery time. I will have less than a 3 inch scar and the stitches will disolve. I will be up and walking within 2 days! I will feel a little sore, but nothing that advil won't help.?

My hope is that more people will educate themselves on kidney donnation and save lives. You don't even have to be a match...but that's for another blog!
