Most Americans now pay for everyday items both large and small with credit cards rather than cash. Partially because credit card transactions have increasingly become the preferred method of payment in most establishments, credit card fraud incidents have jumped in recent years. As a result, law enforcement is cracking down hard on all versions of credit card fraud and financial identity theft.
One new area that law enforcement is paying particular attention to is the tampering of various payment machines. Anyone who could be suspected of such tampering, even if that suspicion is ultimately unfounded, should be aware of these law enforcement efforts. Protecting yourself by making sure that every move you make is legal and can be supported by evidence of your legal action is very important at this time.
Credit card fraudsters and thieves are often posing as repair experts for payment terminals such as ATMs and counter payment terminals. After accessing these systems, they alter the technology to capture PIN numbers and account data for later use. While ATM terminals are a traditional target for fraudsters, gas stations, pharmacies and even checkout terminals at Barnes and Noble have become valuable targets. As a result, anyone who comes into contact with the technology at these terminals should remain aware of this trend.
Consumers are warned regularly about the fraudulent activity of others and are given advice on how to protect personal accounts. Remaining educated on the criminal activity and law enforcement trends affecting your industry is equally important. Failure to protect yourself from suspicion could land you in hot water, even if you are completely innocent.
